Manila: The municipality of Currimao in Ilocos Norte is set to light up over 200 lamp posts, each resembling a miniature lighthouse, along a 2.8-kilometer seawall boulevard and fisherman’s wharf to usher in the Christmas season. The event is scheduled for October 17, marking a festive start for the coastal town.
According to Philippines News Agency, the array of lamp posts, known as “Currilights,” has become a key tourism infrastructure development in Currimao, covering the villages of Pangil, Poblacion 1 and 2, Lioes, Torre, and Salugan. Mayor Edward Quilala announced the lighting of the “Currilights” on Facebook, highlighting its significance for the community.
In a separate post, the Currimao Tourism Office emphasized that the lighting of the “Currilights” “marks the beginning of the Christmas season in Currimao, illuminating our coastal streets with festive cheer and community pride.” The seawall in Currimao is a preferred location for both locals and tourists to enjoy the sunset.
Situated about 459 kilometers from Manila, Currimao is one of the smallest towns in Ilocos Norte and boasts significant cultural sites, including the Tabacalera and Spanish lighthouse ruins near the seawall. In collaboration with the provincial government of Ilocos Norte, the Currimao administration has been working to boost its tourism industry to create jobs and provide livelihoods for residents.
Mayor Quilala expressed anticipation for an increase in visitors once the lamp posts along the seawall are illuminated. To enhance the experience, several stalls offering gastronomic treats have been set up along the seawall. Additionally, the local government is advocating for the area to be used for sporting events, trade fairs, and live concerts.
