Havana: The First International Meeting on Ancestry in Cuba, titled “Turban: Heritage and Identity,” is scheduled to take place at the Plaza Cultural Center in Havana from November 7-9.
According to Lao News Agency, the event is organized by the Municipal Directorate of Culture of the Havana municipality of Plaza de la Revolucion, the Afro-Descendant Neighborhood Network, the Culture Ministry (MINCULT), and the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU), among other institutions.
The program will include concerts, theoretical sessions, dance workshops, art exhibitions, Afro-fairs, and discussion forums. These activities will focus on various topics such as the use of African turbans and hairstyles, cultural heritage and communication, African entrepreneurship, and issues related to Afro-descendant ancestry.
The overarching theme of the event is ‘From Resistance to Existence: Carlota’s Legacy Endures,’ paying homage to the black heroine who led an uprising 163 years ago at the Triunvirato sugar mill in
the western Cuban province of Matanzas.
