Chinese tech giant ByteDance mulls cutting jobs in Indonesia

ISTANBUL: Chinese tech giant ByteDance is mulling over laying off 450 employees in Indonesia as part of its restructuring efforts following the merger of its e-commerce unit, TikTok Shop, with the Indonesian e-commerce company Tokopedia.

The layoffs account for 9 percent of ByteDance’s workforce in the country, the Jakarta Globe reported on Friday.

Nuraini Razak, Tokopedia’s director of corporate affairs, corroborated that the layoffs stem from the merger.

“We had to make necessary adjustments to the organizational structure as part of the company’s strategy to continue growing,” Nuraini was cited as saying in an official statement on Friday.

Earlier this week, Indonesia’s Communication and Information Minister Budi Arie Setiadi threatened to close down social media platform X if it continues allowing the share of questionable content, including pornography, within the country.
