Borongan Allocates PHP118.86 Million Grant for Flood Control and Reforestation

TACLOBAN CITY – a substantial financial grant of PHP118.86 million from the People’s Survival Fund (PSF) is set to be utilized for crucial flood control measures and reforestation efforts. This development follows the recent turnover of the grant by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to Borongan City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda at the Malacañang Palace.

According to Philippines News Agency, the allocation, earmarked for the ‘Reinforcement of Lo-om River Flood Protection System and Redevelopment for Resilient Communities and Livelihood’ project, is a pivotal step in enhancing the city’s resilience against environmental challenges, particularly floods. The project, which was presented to the PSF in July, aims to strengthen the flood control infrastructure along the Lo-om River and bolster reforestation in the region.

The proposal for this project underwent rigorous assessments by the PSF board secretariat and member agencies to ensure compliance with climate-responsive standards. The turnover ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos, Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno, and Commissioner Rachel Anne Herrera of the Climate Change Commission. The PSF, established under Republic Act 10174, is dedicated to funding local government units for climate change adaptation initiatives.
