Vientiane:The Department of Forestry under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry held a national consultation workshop on October 16 to review strategies aimed at developing bamboo, rattan, and non-timber forest products (NTFPs). The initiative emphasizes sustainable resource management and aims to enhance rural livelihoods.
According to Lao News Agency, the workshop was chaired by the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Forestry, Khamfeua Sirivong. It included participation from government officials, provincial authorities from Huaphanh Province, development partners, civil society organizations, and representatives of the private sector.
The discussions focused on national forestry strategies, village forestry policies, and development priorities for bamboo and rattan. Participants explored lessons learned from previous projects and collaborations with development partners and the private sector to bolster value chains, enhance processing standards, and broaden market access.
The development strategy of Huaphanh Province regarding bamboo and NTFPs was highlighted as a model for promoting the sustainable use of natural resources and generating income opportunities for local communities. Additionally, the workshop addressed community forestry governance, forest conservation, and the acknowledgment of customary rights to utilize local land and forest resources.
Bamboo, rattan, and other NTFPs are crucial for providing food, household materials, and income to many rural and upland communities in Laos. Strengthening sustainable harvesting, processing, and market access is seen as a means to reduce rural poverty, support forest restoration, and promote sustainable socio-economic development.
The outcomes of the workshop are expected to inform discussions and technical priorities for the Village Forestry Working Group.
