Vientiane:Preparations are complete for the 2026 Boun Ork Phansa and Boat Racing Festival, set to occur at the Vat Chan riverfront in Chanthabouly District from October 25-27. The festival will showcase traditional boat races competing for the Vientiane Capital Governor's Cup, alongside religious ceremonies and cultural performances.
According to Lao News Agency, Chanthabouly District Administration Chairman Sengathit Phimmouang, who leads the festival organizing committee, announced the completion of preparations during a press conference on October 14.
The festival serves to preserve Lao cultural and religious traditions, attract visitors both locally and internationally, promote local products under the One District, One Product (ODOP) initiative, and stimulate local economic activity.
Religious activities are set to include a blessing ceremony at a sacred site on October 20 at 7 a.m. On October 26, Boun Ork Phansa chanting ceremonies by monks will take place from 3 a.m. to 4 a.m., followed by alms-giving and offerings to the Sangha at 7 a.m.
A candlelight procession, known as Vien Thien, and the launching of illuminated boats, known as Lai Heua Fai, are scheduled for 7 p.m. on October 26. Cultural performances, fireworks, and traditional festivities will begin at 8 p.m. at Chao Anouvong Park and the Victory Monument grounds. Visitors will also have the opportunity to view illuminated boats and float traditional krathong offerings along designated areas of the Mekong River waterfront.
For safety, the organizers have prohibited the use of boats or floating offerings in the middle of the Mekong River.
Sengathit urged government agencies, civil servants, military personnel, police, and residents across Vientiane Capital to participate in the celebrations, assist in maintaining public security and order, and ensure festival areas remain clean.
Boun Ork Phansa marks the end of Buddhist Lent and is traditionally observed across Laos with religious ceremonies and community celebrations. The accompanying boat racing festival is an annual cultural event that unites residents and visitors along the Mekong River.
