Vientiane:Lao irrigation officials participated in practical training on irrigation dam safety inspection at Nam Toung 2 Dam in Feuang District, Vientiane Province. The session, held on September 22, 2026, aimed to enhance the national capacity in managing dam safety.
According to Lao News Agency, the training was part of the project ‘Establishment of Management and Safety Inspection System for Irrigation Dams in the Lao PDR.’ This initiative is funded by a grant from the Government of the Republic of Korea and coordinated by the Department of Irrigation under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
The practical training followed theoretical courses on civil engineering, geology, and hydrology, with expertise provided by specialists from HONG-IK-TAELL Geospatial Information and the Korea Community Development Corporation. Dr. Khamphachan Vongsachanh, Director General of the Department of Irrigation, led the field session, which included deputy directors general, technical specialists, and representati
ves from the Feuang District Office of Agriculture and Environment.
During the inspection, participants evaluated the dam’s structural integrity, including the dam body, water intake structures, and spillways. They checked for water seepage, assessed concrete and steel components, and examined gate mechanisms. Training included the use of equipment such as crack meters, distance finders, and corrosion detectors.
Dr. Khamphachan urged trainees to apply their newfound knowledge and skills in their professional roles. This training is expected to bolster the ability of Lao officials to conduct systematic inspections, thus improving irrigation infrastructure safety in the country.
