Vientiane: The 34th Annual Meeting between the Lao and Vietnamese border delegations took place in Vientiane, focusing on the review of border management cooperation and the strengthening of bilateral ties. The meeting was a significant step in assessing ongoing projects and planning future initiatives to enhance the relationship between the two nations.
According to Lao News Agency, the Lao delegation was led by Mr. Maithong Thammavongsa, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Head of the Lao-Vietnam Border Delegation. The Vietnamese delegation was headed by Mr. Nguyen Minh Vu, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Head of the Vietnam-Laos Border Delegation. The meeting was attended by representatives from relevant central agencies and governors from border provinces of both countries.
The discussions included a review of the implementation of the 2016 Agreement on Border Management Regulations and an assessment of the outcomes from the previous meeting held in Ninh Binh, Vietnam. Both sides commended the efforts of border officials in maintaining security, stability, and order along the shared border over the past two years. This cooperation has been instrumental in reinforcing the long-standing relationship described as a 'Great Friendship, Special Solidarity, and Comprehensive Cooperation.'
The delegations agreed on several measures to further enhance cooperation, including regular joint patrols, improved management of border markers and checkpoints, and the repair of damaged boundary markers. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of raising public awareness about border laws among local communities and village leaders.
Economic development in border areas was another key topic, with both sides highlighting the need for improved infrastructure, expanded border trade, and easier movement of people and goods. These efforts aim to improve local livelihoods and foster regional development.
During their visit, the Vietnamese delegation met with Mr. Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR, reaffirming the enduring partnership between the two countries. The delegation also visited the Lao-Vietnam Friendship Park and cultural tourism sites in Vientiane, further cementing the cultural and diplomatic ties between Laos and Vietnam.
