Bangkok: Laos has won its first gold medal at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok after petanque athlete Bovilak Thepphakan triumphed in the women's singles event on 10 December. The victory marks a significant achievement for the Lao team at the games.
According to Lao News Agency, the competition took place at Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University in Pathum Thani, where the Lao team received support from Sitchan Chittapanya, Head of the Department of High-Level Sports at the Ministry of Education and Sports and head of the national delegation, along with officials from the National Olympic Committee of Laos.
In addition to the gold medal, Laos secured a silver through Bountamy Southamavong in the men's singles and a bronze from Phouthala Keokannika in the shooting discipline. These accomplishments highlight the team's efforts and dedication.
The strong opening-day performance provides an early boost for the Lao contingent at the regional games, setting a promising tone for the rest of the competition.
