Vientiane: A signing ceremony for the Health Sciences University Hospital Construction Project (LAO-15) took place on June 19 in Vientiane, marking a significant milestone in the development of Laos's first university hospital. The agreement was secured between the Ministry of Health and the Korean company ILSUNG, with key figures such as Minister of Health Mr. Bounfeng Phoummalaysith and ILSUNG Director Mr. LEE Sang-Hyun in attendance, alongside the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Laos, Mr. Jung Yung Soo, the Deputy Minister of Health, and representatives from both parties.
According to Lao News Agency, the project is being financed through a soft loan amounting to USD 120 million from the Republic of Korea. The Lao government is supplementing this with an additional USD 21 million investment. The hospital, set to be located in Ban Dongphosy, Hatxayfong District, Vientiane Capital, will feature 400 beds and serve a multifaceted role, including patient treatment, health professional training, and medical research support.
The new facility will enhance healthcare services across various levels, from central and provincial hospitals to district clinics and health centers, catering to both public and private sectors. In addition to its treatment and training capabilities, the hospital stands as a research hub aimed at improving national health policies and treatment methodologies. It will be equipped with a simulation center, modern medical equipment, learning tools, and a digital Health Information System (HIS).
The infrastructure will comprise modern, environmentally friendly buildings, prioritizing accessibility and safety. The majority of the equipment and technology for the hospital will be sourced from Korea. Construction is slated to commence at the end of 2025, with completion expected by 2028.
