Manila: Malaca±ang has issued a warning about a potential increase in fake news as the 2025 midterm elections approach, urging the public to remain vigilant and refrain from becoming 'keyboard warriors' spreading disinformation against the government. Less than a week before millions of Filipinos head to the polls, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro expressed concerns about the persistent use of fake news to undermine the Marcos administration and create confusion among voters.

According to Philippines News Agency, Castro highlighted that disinformation has long been employed to discredit the government and the President. During a press briefing, she stated that fake news is not a new phenomenon and has been used against the President and the government for some time. She appealed to voters to avoid falling prey to malicious online content intended to sway public opinion through baseless attacks.

Castro advised the public to be critical and watchful, emphasizing the importance of not compromising one's dignity or the country's sovereignty. She specifically called out individuals who allegedly spread fake news with the intent of undermining the administration. Castro urged the public not to become 'keyboard warriors' whose sole aim is to damage the President's and the government's reputation through fake news.

Additionally, Senator Francis Tolentino revealed during a Senate inquiry that the Chinese Embassy paid Philippine-based Infinitus Marketing Solutions to create and manage troll farms in the country. These troll farms were allegedly used to spread disinformation, attack government officials, and promote pro-China narratives using fake social media profiles.

Castro reiterated that while criticism is permissible in a democratic society, it must be founded on facts and evidence. She stressed that the government would not obstruct legitimate criticism as long as it is based on truth. However, she warned against fake news peddlers and encouraged the public to combat fake news to make informed decisions in the upcoming elections.

The midterm elections are scheduled for Monday, with millions of Filipinos expected to vote for new members of the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as local government officials.
