Seoul: Republic of Korea has suspended imports of poultry and related products from Brazil after a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak was confirmed at a commercial farm in the country, the agriculture ministry said Saturday. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced this decision in response to Brazil's official notification to the World Organisation for Animal Health regarding an HPAI outbreak at a breeder farm in Rio Grande do Sul. According to Lao News Agency, the suspension affects all Brazilian poultry products, including hatching eggs and day-old chicks, for shipments departing on or after May 15. Shipments that departed within 14 days prior to the ban are subject to HPAI testing upon their arrival in the Republic of Korea. This incident marks the first detection of HPAI at a commercial poultry farm in Brazil, although the virus was initially reported in wild birds in May 2023. As the world's largest chicken exporter, Brazil's poultry industry is significantly impact ed by this development. Currently, 37 shipments, totaling 844 tons of Brazilian chicken meat, are awaiting quarantine clearance at Korean ports. The agriculture ministry noted that there is no immediate concern over contamination due to the timing of shipment and the virus' incubation period, and these products will undergo standard quarantine procedures.
