(KPL) The debriefing session on the outcomes of the UN Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS+2) and consultation of the National Plan of Action on Food Systems Transformation in the Lao PDR meeting held in Vientiane on Sep 29.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Thongphath Vongmany, UN Resident Coordinator a.i and UNICE Country Representative, Dr Pia Rebello Britto attended the meeting.

“Today Debriefing Meeting is an outcome of the participation of Lao Delegation who attended the UN Food Systems Summit +2 Global Stocktaking Moment (or in short UNFSS+2) which was convened by the UN Secretariat and hosted by the Government of Italy, in collaboration with the Rome-based UN Agencies (FAO, IFAD, WFP), the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, and the wider UN system on 24-26 July in Rome this year,” said Mr Thongphath Vongmany.

“I would like to reiterate that the Lao PDR has recognized the importance of sustainable food systems in achieving the national development goals as articulated in the 9th NSEDP including SDGs and LDC graduation smooth transition strategy. In particular, the Government of the Lao PDR is committed to building a sustainable food system that supports the country’s development goals while protecting the environment and improving the livelihoods of its people,” he explained.

He stressed that the transformation of food systems in the Lao PDR is a complex and ongoing process that requires the collaboration of multiple stakeholders, including the Government, farmers, consumers, international organizations, private sector and civil society.

“To guide our ways forwards here in Lao PDR, we will shortly hear from the team who attended the UNFSS+2 on the outcomes and what line ahead of us and what the National Convenor on Food Systems here in Laos plans to engage various types of stakeholders for the finalization of the national action plan on food systems transformation,” said Dr Pia Rebello Britto.

“For the United Nations system, it has a critical role to play in supporting countries like the Lao PDR in the food systems transformation journey. As a multisectoral and multidisciplinary organization, the UN system can bring together various stakeholders, including governments, development partners, civil society, private sector, academia, and other organizations to work towards achieving sustainable food systems,” she added.
