Laos, Thailand and Myanmar cooperate anti-drug crime in the Golden Triangle area

The 2nd Meeting of Golden Triangle Prosecutors Network on ‘’Cooperation to Counter Narcotics Trafficking in the Region’’ was held in Luang Prabang, Laos, from Nov 16-18.

The meeting was co-chaired by Deputy Director the Supreme People’s Prosecutors’s Office of Laos, Khamphet Somvorachit, Deputy Prosecutor General of Thailand, Chumphon Pansumlit, and Head of the International Law Department of the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office of Myanmar, Ms. Swe Swe Aung. Luang Prabang’s Vice Governor Bounleuan Manivong also attended the meeting.

The meeting reviewed the implementation of the results of the 1st Meeting which took place in Chiang Rai province, Thailand in 2018.

The meeting listened to a presentation on the legal basis related to combating and suppressing drug crimes; proposals on the law and how to make better cooperation among countries in criminal matters of the Lao PDR, Thailand and Myanmar.

They also discussed and jointly sought ways to deal with and crack down on transnational crime, especially drug trafficking in the Golden Triangle border area effectively, efficiently and promptly.

The meeting saw that the problem of transnational crime, especially drug crime, has become a global problem that threatens the security of countries in the region and the world. Every year, the problem of drug crime not only causes enormous damage to people’s lives and property, but also hinders the socio-economic development of nations and cooperation in the region.
