The Government of Japan is providing grant assistance worth approximately USD 70,000 for an education project in Champasak Province for the benefit of their students its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

The project supports the construction of a new school classroom building and the provision of school at Phapho Primary School in Pathoumphone District in Champasak Province to improve their educational environment.

The grant agreement was signed by Mr. Kobayashi Kenichi, Ambassador of Japan to Laos and representatives of the provincial authorities, witnessed by Mr Vilayvong Bouddakham, the Governor of Champasak Province.

Speaking on behalf of the Province, Mr Vilayvong Bouddakham, the Governor of Champasak Province said Japan had significantly contributed to the socio-economic development and human resource development of the Province in the education field, especially through supporting basic education.

“This generous support at this time is very important for the Province to create a safe and secure environment for children to achieve their learning outcomes, in terms of fostering valuable human resources for the future. In this sense, such support is a great boost to our efforts in the education field,” said Governor Vilayvong.

“At Phapho Primary School, the existing school building is severely damaged due to aging and past typhoon. Furthermore, students in the primary school have been forced to learn in overcrowded classrooms because of insufficient classrooms in the school at this moment,” said Ambassador Kobayashi.

“We hope that Japan’s support will improve the learning environment for the generations of students who will grow up to be the future of Laos, as well as improve the working environment for teachers and staff,” he added.

Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) provides funds for relatively small-scale projects that directly benefit local residents by supporting economic and social development in developing countries including the Lao PDR.

The Government of Japan has provided more than USD 780,000 to Champasak Province over the past five years to support education, health, infrastructure, and other areas. In a shared effort to address regional disparities in socio-economic development, Japan will continue to support initiatives to improve the basic standard of living at the grassroots level in the Lao P.D.R. to ensure “no one is left behind
