Vientiane: Europe Day, marking 76 years of peace, unity, and solidarity, was celebrated with a significant event in Vientiane, highlighting the enduring legacy and principles of Robert Schuman's 1950 proposal. Schuman's declaration, just five years after World War II, laid the foundation for what would become the European Union, emphasizing the core principles of peace and solidarity.
According to Lao News Agency, Robert Schuman's vision, shared by leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, aimed to unite Europe by pooling strategic resources, making war between historic rivals impossible. This vision evolved from the original six founding nations to the present-day European Union consisting of 27 member states, with nine additional candidate countries, including Ukraine.
The European Union's ability to attract and inspire has always been a cornerstone of its strength, with enlargement serving as a powerful tool for promoting democracy, stability, and prosperity across the continent. To commemorate Europe Day, the EU Delegation to the Lao PDR hosted an official reception attended by key government figures, including Ms. Suansavanh Vignaket, Minister of Culture and Tourism, and Mr. Maythong Thammavongsa, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, along with senior representatives and distinguished guests.
The event provided an opportunity to reflect on the guiding principles of peace and solidarity that have driven European integration since 1950 and reaffirmed the strong partnership between the EU and the Lao PDR. In the current global landscape, the EU continues to rely on its founding principles, building robust partnerships worldwide to address global challenges like climate change, digital transformation, and human rights pressures.
Mr. Mark Gallagher, EU Ambassador to Laos, emphasized the importance of partnerships, stating, "Europe is and will remain a strong and reliable partner, including of the Lao PDR, for cooperation, respect for international law, reciprocity, and human dignity. Europe Day is a celebration of Europe's unity and our enduring partnerships around the world."
As the EU continues its commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation, Europe Day underscores the importance of shared solutions to shared challenges, with unity remaining Europe's greatest asset.
