A detainee who allegedly managed to go outside the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) detention facility without authorization by bribing his captors was brought before the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday in the continuation of the preliminary investigation against him. In his counter-affidavit, Jose Adrian “Jad” Dera, who was charged with bribery and corruption of a public official, formally denied the new charges against him. His erstwhile captors, five contractual personnel and one regular employee of the NBI, also denied the charges of infidelity in the custody of prisoner, and graft and corruption filed against them in separate counter-affidavits. The charges are now deemed submitted for resolution by the DOJ, which will decide to bring the case to court. Dera and the six NBI personnel were apprehended last June 21 aboard an NBI vehicle as they were making they were returning from an unauthorized trip outside the detention facility. The DOJ said it plans to transfer Dera to another detention facility following the incident after investigations showed the unauthorized trip was only the latest in a series of preferential treatment for the former police informant.
