Manila: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is actively compiling and analyzing evidence against candidates with pending disqualification cases ahead of the upcoming elections. With a significant number of complaints filed, the electoral body aims to ensure the integrity of the election process.
According to Philippines News Agency, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia revealed that approximately 400 complaints related to vote-buying and abuse of state resources (ASR) have been lodged with the Committee on Kontra-Bigay. This committee is responsible for investigating allegations of vote buying and selling.
The Clerk of the Commission is meticulously reviewing these cases, especially those supported by substantial evidence, to assess the feasibility of suspending the proclamation of winning candidates on May 12, should they be found guilty. "We are already gathering those with disqualification cases with the Clerk of the Commission," Garcia stated in an interview.
Commissioner Ernesto Maceda Jr., who heads the Committee on Kontra-Bigay, previously indicated that they anticipate a surge in complaints related to vote buying and ASR as the election day approaches. The Omnibus Election Code stipulates that a conviction for vote-buying and similar offenses can result in imprisonment from one to six years, disqualification from public office, and loss of voting rights.
