Jakarta:The Lao PDR is planning to enhance its postal network and digital infrastructure with the goal of becoming a regional postal hub by 2030. The initiative also aims to improve reliable delivery services in rural and remote areas, as stated by Minister of Technology and Communications Prof. Dr. Santisouk Simmalavong during World Post Day on October 9, 2026.
According to Lao News Agency, the Ministry of Technology and Communications has outlined three strategic priorities for 2026-2030 regional connectivity, digital infrastructure, and inclusive access. The ministry plans to utilize the Lao-China Railway, economic corridors, and dry ports to boost regional postal connectivity. Additionally, the development of a national digital addressing system, parcel-tracking services, and data exchanges with customs systems are intended to modernize delivery operations.
The ministry also aims to provide secure, convenient, and high-quality postal services to communities across the country. Prof. Dr. Santisouk Simmalavong emphasized the growing importance of the postal sector in communication, trade, and e-commerce, which now extends beyond traditional letter and parcel delivery to support broader economic activities.
The Lao postal sector has seen significant expansion in recent years. By 2025, the number of postal operators increased from 32 to 65, and the nationwide network expanded to 3,449 service points, covering all districts in the country’s 18 provinces. Parcel volumes reached 17.52 million items, generating revenue of 316.44 billion kip. The Universal Postal Development score also improved from 35.4 points in 2023 to 49.3 points in 2025.
This year’s World Post Day commemorates the establishment of the Universal Postal Union on October 9, 1874, with the 2026 theme, “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities,” highlighting the evolving role of the postal sector in connecting people, businesses, and markets. Prof. Dr. Santisouk Simmalavong acknowledged the contributions of postal operators, officials, and workers, urging all stakeholders to collaborate in improving services and creating new opportunities for citizens and businesses. He noted that continued modernization and cooperation would enhance the postal sector’s role in the country’s socio-economic development.
