Vientiane: Megan Jones, the Australian Ambassador to the Lao PDR, embarked on a visit to Oudomxay, Luang Namtha, and Luang Prabang from July 6-11, 2026, to bolster cooperation with national and provincial authorities. Her visit aimed to review joint Lao-Australia initiatives that focus on health, education, and economic development.
According to Lao News Agency, during her visit, Ambassador Jones engaged in discussions with provincial leaders, including Mr. Vongsavanh Xayyavong, Mr. Onchanh Khamphavong, and Mr. Bounelua Sinxayvoravong, focusing on provincial development priorities. These discussions aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of people in northern Laos through continued cooperation.
A significant highlight of the Ambassador's visit was the launch of the Wolbachia mosquito release initiative, part of the Driving Down Dengue in Laos programme, in Oudomxay and Luang Prabang. The launch was led by Mrs. Baykham Khattiya and Mrs. Aphone Visathep, illustrating the Lao Government's dedication to combating dengue and improving public health.
The Ambassador also observed the implementation of the Health and Nutrition Services Access Phase II (HANSA II) programme in Oudomxay and Luang Namtha. This initiative supports the Government's efforts to enhance health and nutrition services, particularly for women and children in remote areas.
At Oudomxay Provincial Hospital, the focus was on strengthening eye health services, a collaboration between the Ministry of Health and provincial authorities to improve access to eye care and service delivery.
In Luang Namtha, the Ambassador visited Viengphoukha district to witness community development activities. These included mobile health services, education initiatives for girls, and climate-resilient water and sanitation projects at Thong Laad Health Centre, contributing to community health and educational improvements.
In Luang Prabang, discussions with government representatives, businesses, and community organizations centered on promoting sustainable economic growth, tourism, and investment. The Ambassador also visited a social enterprise aimed at income generation for women and persons with disabilities, highlighting a shared commitment to inclusive development.
Ambassador Jones emphasized Australia's commitment to collaborating with the Lao PDR to support development priorities, praising the leadership of the Ministry of Health, provincial authorities, and local communities.
