Laos Celebrates World Telecommunication and Information Society Day with Focus on Digital Transformation

Vientiane: Laos marked World Telecommunication and Information Society Day with a commitment to furthering its digital transformation efforts, as stated by Minister of Technology and Communications Santisouk Simmalavong. This occasion, which commemorates the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 1865, underscores the country's dedication to advancing its telecommunications infrastructure.

According to Lao News Agency, Minister Simmalavong emphasized the significant role the ITU has played in supporting Laos, particularly in areas such as telecommunications law development, radio-frequency planning, and the formulation of national internet strategies. The ITU's contributions also extend to human resource training and technical assistance, all of which have been pivotal in Laos' ongoing digital transformation efforts.

The minister highlighted the upcoming celebration of National Post and Telecommunication Day on March 13, 2026. This event will be held under the slogan: 'Upgrading Postal and Telecommunication Infrastructure into Digital Infrastructure to Contribute to Socio-Economic Development.' It reflects the government's commitment to enhancing modern and secure telecommunications, ICT, AI, and digital technologies. These advancements are intended to support socio-economic growth, digital government, and the wider development of a digital economy and society, aligning with Industry 4.0 objectives.

Laos' government is set to continue its implementation of the National Digital Economy Development Plan and the National Telecommunications and Internet Development Strategy 2026-2040. These strategic plans aim to bolster the country's digital capabilities over the coming decades.

Minister Simmalavong also urged state agencies, businesses, service providers, and the public to promote the responsible use of digital technologies. He stressed the importance of strengthening awareness of online fraud and supporting digital skills development to ensure that digital growth is both inclusive and sustainable.
